Oilers Win Game 1 of First-Round Series Against Kings

Hyman Scores Hat Trick, McDavid Records Five Assists

Edmonton, AB – April 13, 2023 –

The Edmonton Oilers got off to a strong start in their first-round playoff series against the Los Angeles Kings, winning Game 1 by a score of 7-4. Zach Hyman led the way for the Oilers, scoring his first career playoff hat trick. Connor McDavid also had a big night, picking up five assists. 

The Oilers took an early lead in the game, scoring two goals in the first period. Hyman got the scoring started with a power-play goal at 5:49 of the first period. McDavid assisted on the goal. Hyman then made it 2-0 with a goal at 12:37 of the first period, again assisted by McDavid.

The Kings came back to tie the game in the second period, scoring two goals of their own. Trevor Moore scored at 4:34 of the second period, assisted by Anze Kopitar. Kopitar then tied the game with a goal at 12:27 of the second period, assisted by Moore.

The Oilers regained the lead in the third period, scoring three goals in the first 10 minutes of the period. Hyman completed his hat trick with a goal at 1:32 of the third period, assisted by McDavid. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins then made it 4-2 with a goal at 6:27 of the third period, assisted by McDavid and Hyman. Leon Draisaitl then made it 5-2 with a goal at 9:37 of the third period, assisted by Evan Bouchard.

The Kings cut the lead to 5-4 with two goals in the final five minutes of the game. Adrian Kempe scored at 15:06 of the third period, assisted by Kopitar. Kopitar then made it 5-4 with a goal at 17:20 of the third period, assisted by Kempe.

The Oilers held on for the 7-4 win, taking a 1-0 lead in the series. Game 2 will be played in Edmonton on Saturday night.
