NDP MPP Sarah Jama Apologizes for Controversial Tweet

MPP faces backlash for comments on Israel

Ontario New Democrat MPP Sarah Jama is facing criticism and calls for her resignation after making controversial comments about Israel on social media. In a since-deleted tweet, Jama said that Israel is an "apartheid state" and that it is "committing genocide" against Palestinians.

Jama's comments were widely condemned by Jewish groups and other organizations, who accused her of spreading antisemitism and hatred. The National Council of Canadian Muslims, where Jama serves as a board member, also issued a statement condemning her remarks.

Jama has since apologized for her tweet, but she has not retracted it. She said that she was "deeply sorry" for the hurt and offense that her comments caused.

The NDP has also condemned Jama's comments, and has said that she will be facing consequences for her actions. The party has not yet said what those consequences will be.

Jama is a first-term MPP who was elected in a byelection in Hamilton Centre earlier this year. She is the first Somali-Canadian woman to be elected to the Ontario legislature.
